Incredible Journey

As Samuel approaches the end of his Year 13 Gap Year with Youthworks, we can’t help but reflect on how incredible this journey has been for him—and for us as parents.

We had high hopes for what this year could bring, and we really wanted Sam to grow in his faith, develop independence, and be stretched in ways that only a program like Year 13 could offer. From learning to think, speak, and act more like Jesus, to managing the demands of two days at Year 13, two days at church, and two days of paid work, Sam was truly challenged to grow up and take on new responsibilities (including mastering the art of using a diary—who knew!).

The weekly onsite stays gave him a taste of independence and helped him grow comfortable being away from home, which was a win for everyone. We also hoped he’d be stretched in his faith, and the Fiji mission trip was a perfect example of him learning to deny himself for the sake of the gospel. It’s something we’ve seen shape him deeply.

One of the biggest blessings has been the inspiring people Sam has met along the way—fellow students and wise, godly leaders, who have invested time into his life and helped him grow. He’s formed strong friendships with other young Christians, and these relationships have been such a positive influence on him.

This year has also given Sam a much-needed breather after 13 years of schooling, but it’s been a productive one—far beyond what we could have imagined.

We see this year as one of the best investments we’ve made in Sam’s life. The rewards have far exceeded our already high expectations.

We are so incredibly grateful for Year 13. Thank you for everything!
